Baker Consultants’ Ecoacoustics Research is Making Headlines Across the UK

Our client Baker Consultants have been making headlines lately as they recently appeared on BBC News Midlands Today, where they were interviewed about the bioacoustics research project they’ve been working on with soil scientists from the University of Warwick.

Their research also found its way onto national BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today, and was featured in both The Times and The Sunday Telegraph. After being ‘under wraps’ for a while, it’s great to finally let this exciting project out into the wild!

Earlier this summer, Baker Consultants was awarded a £250,00 DEFRA grant to undertake a two-year research project investigating the feasibility of using ecoacoustics for monitoring soil health. This is part of the DEFRA Farming Innovation Programme delivered by Innovate UK, and will see the team listen to below ground activity to help landowners and farmers understand their soil health better.

The team have developed a first of its kind “soil listening device” (patent pending) which allows them to listen to, record and analyse the sounds made by wildlife living in the soil. They debuted their piece of tech at RHS Chelsea this year, where they were invited to showcase their work at the RES show garden, designed by the talented Tom Massey. Baker captured the attentions of the VIPs who came along for the after hours sessions in the evenings at the show, and further captured the attention of delegates at the Groundswell show at Lannock Farm a couple of weeks ago too.

On Wednesday 2nd August, Baker Consultants joined Mr. Fothergill’s annual Press Day; another dear friend and client of ours. The team showcased their technology and research once again, captivating the gardening press and media with their ground-breaking, innovative approach to monitoring soil health.

It’s safe to say there’s some exciting times ahead for our friends at Baker Consultants as they put themselves at the forefront of revolutionising the future of food and farming!
