Instagram Edits is Here – A New Video Editing App to Rival TikTok’s CapCut

The wait is over for those who pre-ordered Instagram’s highly anticipated video editing app, Edits! A notification recently landed in inboxes, signalling that the app is finally ready for use. Content creators and marketers alike wasted no time diving in for a first look at this new tool, which has been crafted with one main goal: to elevate Reels and challenge TikTok’s dominance in the video editing space.

The launch of Instagram’s Edits app is a bold move by Meta to stake a bigger claim in the short-form video space, especially as political tensions in the U.S. continue to threaten TikTok’s dominance. Earlier this year, proposed legislation led to TikTok (and its sister app, CapCut) being temporarily removed from U.S. app stores. Sensing an opportunity, Meta swooped in, announcing Edits as a direct response; a robust, creator-focussed alternative that keeps people within Instagram.

The typical video creation process can be a bit of a nightmare: jumping between apps, juggling different features, exporting files, re-uploading them elsewhere and trying to work around watermarks. It’s messy. Edits aims to simplify all of that by bringing everything into one seamless interface. You can plan, shoot, edit and publish without ever leaving the app. It’s a creator’s dream (in theory!).

Edits has also been built in direct collaboration with content creators, involving them in the development process from day one and gathering feedback through beta testing and early access.

So, What Does Instagram Edits Actually Do?

Idea Management: Keep track of your video ideas in one convenient spot, add sticky notes, and save your Reel concepts for easy access later.

Powerful Editing Tools: Create content using a high-quality camera, a frame-accurate timeline and advanced features like AI-powered cut-outs and animations.

Optimised Content Creation: Stay ahead of trends with an inspiration feed featuring trending audio and reels, plus performance insights to refine your content and see what resonates best with your audience.

Exciting Features Still on the Horizon

The initial release of Edits marks just the beginning, as Instagram plans to roll out even more features in the coming months, including:

Keyframe Animations: Pinpoint exact moments in your clips to animate position, rotation, and scale, adding a new level of precision to your videos.

AI-Powered Modifications: Effortlessly adjust the look and feel of your videos with smart, AI-driven features.

Collaboration Features: Share drafts with friends, fellow creators, or brands to gather feedback and collaborate on projects seamlessly.

Expanded Creative Options: Access new fonts, text animations, transitions, voice effects, filters, sound effects, and royalty-free music to elevate your videos.

Since its launch, Edits has quickly gained traction, surpassing 7 million downloads within its first week, surpassing the initial success of TikTok’s CapCut. This rapid adoption underscores just how strong Meta’s global reach is. With the ability to instantly market and widely distribute the app, Edits has been given a head start that few new apps ever get.

So, is Edits signalling the end of TikTok? Not yet. However, what it offers is an incredibly useful, integrated tool for creators who are already invested in Instagram and looking for more control over their content without jumping through hoops. And with uncertainty still looming over TikTok’s future in the U.S., the recent temporary ban served as a wake-up call for creators who rely on the platform as a source of income, and Meta has positioned itself as the hero ready to swoop in.

This could be one of Meta’s smartest moves in years, but some work is still needed. If they keep listening to creators and rolling out meaningful updates, Edits could become the new go-to app for social-first video production.
