Every year Mr Fothergill’s hold a Press Day event for the gardening media. This helps the press learn more about the prevailing winds in the industry, to learn more about the latest developments at Mr Fothergill’s and to see new varieties that are due to be released in the following year following our trials, so this is a first opportunity for people to see new products in their fully grown out state 12 months ahead of the curve.
We figured that with the effort that goes into growing all these trials out, and attempting to get everything in bloom or cropping by the first week in August for this event, it would be a great opportunity to share with a wider audience.
We’ve been looking after Mr Fothergill’s social media channels for a number of years and have had to shape shift what we do to keep up with new platforms, new trends and new formats. With the advent of Reels and short-form video as a favoured format of content in the algorithms, it has given rise to a population of influencers and content creators who are talented at putting this kind of content together. So we thought that we’d invite them along to see the Trials Ground ‘in the flesh’, and the idea of an Open Day event was born!
With weeks of cold and dreary rainy conditions in the lead up to the planned event, we were starting to get a little worried that this ‘height of summer’ opportunity for people to immerse themselves in the plant geek heaven on earth would be washed out.
Our fingers were kept firmly crossed and we got the pay off. The heavens shone down on us for a short window to allow the event to go ahead in all it’s fine-weather glory.

As you can see, we had a blast!
The results are still rolling in, but we assembled 40 people who collectively had a reach of 1.42million people.
In the first 5 days following the event we generated:
