Baker Consultants Launch Sister Company Soil Acoustics Ltd.

After months and months of dedicated research and development, our friends at ecology consultancy, Baker Consultants, recently launched their exciting new venture: Soil Acoustics ltd., a sister company dedicated to transforming soil health monitoring. Alongside this, they are launching a Kickstarter campaign for their Patent-Pending Soil Acoustic Meter (SAM), a soil monitoring device which offers a completely new way to understand soil health by ‘listening’ to the sounds within the soil.

Having worked with the team at Baker Consultants for quite a few years now, we’ve come to learn about the critical role that healthy soil plays in the future of food, farming and global warming. Healthy soil provides essential benefits, from supporting food production and combating climate change to fostering biodiversity. Conversely, poor soil management can lead to degradation, which reduces the ability of soil to perform these vital functions.

Soil Acoustics Ltd. is a commercial soil acoustics service that has been launched to introduce the Patent-Pending SAM device to the market, a unique device that allows users to place a probe into the ground to capture and analyse soil sounds, offering an innovative, simple way to assess and monitor soil health. This tool is set to make waves in the fields of agriculture, land management and environmental science, providing farmers, researchers and estate managers to assess soil vitality with greater accuracy, whilst saving them time and money in the long-run.

The development of this device was made possible by Baker Consultants’ £250,000 grant from DEFRA’s Farming Innovation Programme nearly two years ago. Since then, Baker Consultants has collaborated with scientists from the University of Warwick Crop Centre, capturing thousands of soil sound samples and building an extensive database to support the development of algorithms that use these sounds as indicators of soil health.

SAM has already undergone field trials with industry leaders like Yeo Valley, First Milk, Ruinart, The National Trust, The Devonshire Group and JoJo’s Vineyard. Their research has also gained significant media attention, reaching media outlets such as local BBC News, National BBC Breakfast, The Times and The Sunday Telegraph. The team were even invited to showcase their research at Mr. Fothergill’s Press Day and the Royal Entomological Society’s Show Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2023.

To bring SAM to the market, Soil Acoustics Ltd. is launching a Kickstarter campaign, allowing early-adopters to access this ground-breaking technology. As a thank you, early adopters will be able to enjoy unlimited uploads and analysis for the first year – all for under £1,000. Additionally, there’s an option to secure a SAM device with a deposit, which can be cashed-in against the purchase of a device any time during 2025.

If you’re eager to bring this cutting-edge soil health technology to your land or business, you can sign up for the early-adopter programme and reserve your SAM device through their Kickstarter campaign here.

Having watched from the side-lines as our friends at Baker Consultants have worked hard behind-the-scenes, conducting extensive research to bring this device to life, we’re excited to see this device finally enter the market. We can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have on the future of food, farming and environmental health.
