A Day In The Life Of A Work Experience Student at Destination Digital. A Day-to-Day Journey Showing What I Got Up To

A student blog about my five-day work experience at Destination Digital. I came in on Monday 8th July and I finished on Friday 12th July. I added to this daily, when I had a minute to document my experience.

Before I arrived for my work experience, I was quite nervous, as anyone would be, but those nerves were only momentary as I got to meet and know everyone. Everyone here is really sweet and down to earth, not like one of those obnoxious colleagues that just judge you when you don’t know something. No not like that.

I also had a hard time naming this blog because nothing ever seems right when it’s your own work.

More about me: I’m a 16 (nearly 17) year old student at Lady Manners. We were asked to do work experience so we could see if this was the path we wanted to follow in the future. I do Media, English Language and Economics in sixth form.

Monday 8th July

When I arrived, I got a planner set out for the week, clearly explaining what the business does and how everything works as well as what I’d be doing.

I sat in on the weekly team meeting with Rachel, Ed, Hannah and Debbie. Debbie is the managing director as well as the owner. The meeting was very productive as we got to it but we also had a friendly chat to get to know one another. The whole environment is very cordial as well as a good mix of professional and hardworking.

Once the meeting was done, Ed showed me the ropes and explained what to do step by step. I got to make some posts, go through emails and use the business’ social media. It felt so good to see something I’d done on the computer in front of me.

Around midday, we met a client from Weiss Technik UK. I stayed out of the way, however I listened to the meeting to gain further insight on designing a new website for the business and other general going-ons. We also had a lunch with the client which was a relief as it felt more like a nice, calm discussion then an uptight meeting.

Once the meeting was done, I just went back to doing some work on the computers which was straight forward.

Tuesday 9th July

Today I arrived at 9am, this being my first 9-5. I got to work, doing some quiet work while looking through emails for something to new post on Arts Derbyshire. After I went through that, I started replying to comments on Facebook, twitter (X) and Instagram.

I spent most of my time today going through Instagram and TikTok to find audios that are old, current or new in the trending side of things. I was able to make a pretty large collection of audios and I wrote up some advice for the reader to use.

Wednesday 10th July

Above is an image I took on our walk.

Today, Ed and I went on a walk to Aldi and Co-op to get some snacks and pastries for a meeting and a picnic which was great. We had the picnic inside due to the grotty weather but that didn’t make it any less good.

We had the meeting with a lady named Laurie who recently had a baby so we got to meet little Annabelle which was very nice.

For the picnic we got to sit together at the table and have a bunch of food snacks that we’d gotten that morning like pasta, meats, literally anything you’d expect at a work lunch which was really cool. We just chatted about a bunch of topics which made the conversations not awkward at all because we all relatively had the same opinion.

I finished the day just by doing a little more work at my workspace. Once I got the hang of it everything just seemed like second nature.

Thursday 11th July

Today, Ed and Debbie were out of office doing a talk in Buxton so it was just Rachel and I in office. We cracked onto doing our own things and we found out a little more about each other. I was able to record shots for a reel I had to make titled “A Day in the life of a work experience student at Destination Digital”

Overall, today I just cracked on with my work and I did a little more towards my online audio blog.

Friday 12th July

I can’t believe its already Friday, the week’s gone by too quickly. Today Rachel wasn’t in and Ed was on holiday so I was with Louise for most of the day. I also only discovered today that my friend was also working around here so him and I met up and we went to Bakewell for a sausage roll and a chat. I was also able to post my reel today which was good.

I’m now finishing off my list that I had for the week which honestly feels very satisfying to know I’ve done something worthwhile. I now see why people love making lists because they really do help keep you on track. The school is now facing an unintended consequence as now I don’t want to go back, I far prefer working here at my own pace with good company but unfortunately for me that’s coming to an end when the clock hits 5.

Overall

The whole week was better than I could’ve expected. I enjoyed this more than any of my current jobs – which I won’t tell my mom because she wont stop being all smug with her “I told you so” nonsense, even if she was inevitably right. Moms always are. But overall, it was really good, I would definitely recommend this place to any students wondering about work experience or even any potential job seekers. If I could come back I definitely would, maybe one day I’ll be back when I’m done with school. Who knows?
